After being released from prison after 25 years, New York Mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sylvester Stallone’s first starring role in a television series.
The opening credits sequence shows various photographic and painted views, as well as Oklahoma landmarks, superimposed on the New York City landscape: A statue of Sioux chief “Touch the Clouds” wearing a war bonnet and bone necklace (breastplate) superimposed on the top of the Brooklyn BridgeThe Golden Drill statue superimposed on the Statue of LibertyThe Route 66 Western Gateway Arch superimposed on Manhattan’s main avenue. In New York City, in the borough of Manhattan, there are several numbered “Avenues” that are intersected by smaller numbered streets.
I’ve always liked Stallone, over the years, yes he’s addicted to sequels but he’s made some really enjoyable movies, scattering a few classics along the way. Tulsa King may be his best work, just from an acting perspective, he just ruthlessly takes on the role of a mob capo.
The show itself has an interesting story, is well written, makes full use of the humor of a New York gangster in Tulsa, Oklahoma without ever getting silly, add a healthy dose of violence, good writing and dialogue and a great cast of supporting actors and characters and you have a winner.
