Ingrid and Marta were close friends in their youth when they worked together at the same magazine. After years of not being in touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation.. Pedro Almodóvar’s first full-length feature film in English.. The Room Next Door is a 2024 drama film based on the 2020 novel What Are You Going Through, starring Julianne Moore as Ingrid, an author who receives devastating news from a friend and colleague she hasn’t seen in years, so she travels.
At the hospital, he meets Marta (Tilda Swinton) and everything seems to be going well until Marta asks Ingrid to help her commit suicide after no one else has been able to do the task. Excellently made, the film itself carries a dramatic tone along with a bit of humor sprinkled throughout and is engaging to say the least. However, I don’t think this film is for everyone as it can be a bit slow and the dialogue takes a while to build into the melodramatic vibe that I really like to see in stories. The acting is very impressive as 2 of the best actresses in the industry today do such a great job and it doesn’t seem like they’re trying, it’s that good!
It also makes the whole film very interesting and I don’t think today’s modern actors could really do justice to this story if they were the leads, there’s something about these 2 that really creates a strong bond with each other. Of course, John Turturro is well used and it was very nice to see him again as Ingrid’s ex. However, the downside is the beginning, the prequel was completely pointless and I really don’t understand why they did it. to show all these scenes.
I think he was trying to fill time but it felt quite random and unrelated to what the majority of the movie was about. I didn’t get it either, the acting and dialogue in the prequel was just terrible and really could have been done better or actually removed. Overall a very well made and decent movie with mostly great performances and a star. It was enjoyable and kept me entertained throughout but it won’t be for everyone.
I would recommend it to people who are fans of the cast or just like movies in general.
