The film also drew inspiration from narrative elements from the Saturday morning animated television series Sonic the Hedgehog (1993). In the Sonic X television series, Professor Gerald Robotnik was killed by G.U.N. agents. But in this film, he was still alive, and he reunited with his grandson, Dr. Robotnik.
