Featured on Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris/Colman Domingo/Jose Medelez (2024). While this new independent film distributed by A24 is set in a New York prison, it’s less of a "prison movie" in the conventional sense, and more as an emotionally affecting and inspiring drama about how art – especially theater – can restore people in need of rehabilitation. The film’s depiction of this problem is real and heartfelt and forms the cornerstone of an overall fascinating story.
The film takes a little while to really get going, but it still remains engrossing and engaging. Domingo’s performance is great, showing understated emotion in a way that has a strong impact on the viewer while also conveying a deep sense of compassion. The supporting cast is also excellent and many of the supporting cast members have clearly been to prison.
Incorporating the theater program into the narrative creates comic relief, but also pathos and a strong bond between the inmates and the program director. "Sing Sing" it’s not perfect, as the character development of the supporting characters could have been improved, but its beating heart and thoughtful, humane tone are genuinely moving and memorable. 8/10.
