An influential CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a steamy romance with her much younger intern. Featured in Graham Norton and Guest: Nicole Kidman/Cynthia Erivo/James Norton/Chris McClausland/Benson Boone (2024). I recently watched Babygirl and have to say it’s one of the most unique and daring thrillers I’ve seen in a long time.
Directed by Halina Reijn, the film delves deep into the complexity of human desire and power dynamics, wrapped in an intense, almost oppressive atmosphere. Jasper Wolf’s cinematography captures the raw emotion of each scene, blending light and shadow to create a melancholy, almost dreamlike world. There’s a constant feeling of tension, like something explosive is always about to happen, and the pacing keeps you on your toes the whole time.
Nicole Kidman delivers a stunning performance, giving her character a mix of vulnerability and cold calculation. The supporting cast, while lesser known, also do a great job, adding depth and unpredictability to the story. Without giving too much away, the film’s exploration of psychological control and submission is both disturbing and fascinating.
The erotic elements are tastefully done, but may be uncomfortable or controversial for some viewers. The plot feels intentionally vague at times, forcing you to piece together the characters’ motivations, which I found intriguing but may frustrate others. Overall, Babygirl is definitely worth a watch if you like psychological thrillers that don’t shy away from and go beyond taboo subjects.
